Track Cycling

Track cycling and racing take place on outdoor tracks, typically 400m in length with surfaces of concrete or tarmac, or indoor Velodromes with 250m wooden tracks with steep banking. The nearest Velodrome is in Newport, South Wales and is an excellent facility; 250 metre (Olympic size) wooden track with 42 degree banking. Track bikes have no gears, no brakes and no freewheel, so they take a bit of getting used to!

There is a huge variety to the training and races which can take place, with individual races including the pursuit, match sprint and 'kilo'; bunch races including the scratch race (first across the line), points race (with several intermediate sprints) and Madison (pairs of riders in relay); and team races including team pursuit and team sprint.

We are offering places first to VC Sevale members (including second claim) and their immediate family. The cost is £10 per 2-hour session. Unless you have your own track bike, you will also need to pay for bike hire which is approx £9 per session and can be done on the day.

All hire bikes are fitted with Look Keo pedals or toe clips and straps, so you will need cycling shoes with Keo cleats, or trainers. You will also need a cycle helmet and cycling mitts/gloves, as well as suitable clothing (nothing baggy).

To book a place please email Mike Amery at amery_07@fsmail.net, giving the names of the riders, an indication of their level of experience, age if under 18, and whether they will need a hire bike. Payment can be made via BACS to Santander account 09-01-26 04570542.
