Track cycling

Track cycling and racing take place on outdoor tracks, typically 400m in length with surfaces of concrete or tarmac, or indoor Velodromes with 250m wooden tracks with steep banking. The nearest outdoor track to Malvern is at Halesowen, and the nearest Velodrome is in Newport, South Wales. Track bikes have no gears, no brakes and no freewheel, so they take a bit of getting used to!

There is a huge variety to the training and races which can take place, with individual races including the pursuit, match sprint and ‘kilo’; bunch races including the scratch race (first across the line), points race (with several intermediate sprints) and Madison (pairs of riders in relay); and team races including team pursuit and team sprint.

Trips to the indoor velodrome, Newport, South Wales can be arranged by Mike Amery.

The track is an excellent facility; it is a 250 meter (Olympic size) wooden track with 42 degree banking.

There are a number of ‘Drop in’ sessions each week, usually lasting 2 hours, run by experienced and helpful coaches.

Anyone can attend, from track novices to experienced track riders.  Good quality track bikes are available for hire.

Cost:                £4.00 for a 2-hour coached session

                        £6.00 for bike hire

Plus sharing the cost of fuel
